Kidney Awareness 83

Description:

Our plan this year for our purpose project is to hold a walk at the YMCA and really incorporate kidney education as well as what we do here in the clinic.

Purpose:

This Purpose Project will not only have a lot of community outreach but also, according to a lot of our feedback from our prior Purpose Project, will have a big impact on our patients as well as their families, with education and possibly help them understand their care even more and learn a little something they might not have realized.

Conclusion:

The Kidney Walk took place on Sunday, May 19 from 2-4pm at the YMCA in Mt. Pleasant, PA. The event had approximately 300 participants from around the community. The event was advertised through fliers posted at local businesses, on the radio, tv, and on Facebook. Donny Barney provided live entertainment for the event. Medic 10 conducted free blood pressure checks. The American Nephrology Nurses Association hosted a table providing kidney disease education. Participants received t-shirts and were encouraged to walk in order to receive a raffle ticket for each lap they completed on the half mile course. Walkers also received a raffle ticket for each vendor table they visited and for talking to DCI staff at education stations, which were nearly 300 signs posted with kidney disease facts. The raffle tickets were used to raffle off unique baskets. In the end, individuals with kidney disease, their friends and families, and community leaders learned more about each other and how to battle kidney disease. The event also raised over $300 for the Western PA Kidney Kamp.
