“Dat” Transplant Life

Description:

“Dat Transplant Life” will involve partnering with local community resources and organizations to identify those at risk for kidney disease through organized free screenings and encourage follow up care and treatment.

Purpose:

“Dat Transplant Life” hopes to increase community awareness of risks and long term complications as it relates to kidney disease. We also hope to encourage screenings in hopes of early detection and treatment.

Conclusion:

Team “Dat” Transplant Life, collaborated with The National Kidney Foundation of Louisiana, and St. Peter Claver Catholic Church Health and Wellness Ministry for our 2019 Purpose Project and hosted a “Keeping Your Kidneys Health Screening.”

This event was hosted in the historic Treme’ Neighborhood in New Orleans, LA. This area is well known to locals and tourists. It was a huge success!! Approximately, 128 participants including participants from in and out of the community. Some participants traveled as many as 40 miles to take advantage of this screening. We were able to spread the word of this great event with the help of our local radio and television news stations. It was such a success, NKF and SPC Health and Wellness Ministry inquired about partnering again and hosting this event annually.

The purpose of this event was to identify individuals at increased risk for kidney disease and encourage them to seek further evaluation and follow-up from a physician. Screening individuals who are hypertensive or diabetic, or who have family members with these conditions and/or kidney disease, is a productive way of identifying a high percentage of people who may be at increased risk. In addition to partnering with NKF of LA and SPC Church, we also had support from the Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency (LOPA), and Tulane Abdominal Transplant.

At this screening, participants were provided the following:

• Blood pressure, weight, and height measurements
• Blood tests: glucose, estimated GFR, BUN, and phosphorus
• Urine dipstick test (results provided on site)
• A print out of entire screening results, including eGFR, within two weeks
• On site clinical consultation from local nephrologists and nurse practitioners
• Follow-up call from NKF by telephone within one week if test results are critical
• Free educational materials (kidney disease, heart disease, treatment options, organ donation, healthy eating, etc.).
