On June 10th DCI – West Plains held a Health Expo at the West Plains Missouri State University (MSU) campus from 8:00 am – noon. The focus was Transplant Awareness for this community-wide event. There were exhibits, door prizes as well as things for the kiddos. A local radio station did a live remote from 10:00 am – noon.

The Health Expo was a means of providing information about organ donation, the transplant process as well as the available healthcare resources in our communities. There was an opportunity to sign up to be an organ donor, for those interested in becoming one. In addition, there were free chronic kidney education provided as well as blood pressure checks.

Participants included: DCI transplant recipients, Missouri Kidney Program, West Plains Fire Department, Transplant Programs, as well as numerous others. DCI – West Plains had 6 patients who received kidney transplants in the 12 months prior to the Health Expo (we have 7 to-date). Some were on hand to answer questions as well as share their transplant journey. The American Red Cross was also there for a blood drive conducted in conjunction with the Health Expo.

Purpose:

Educate patients and community of the benefits of organ donation and transplantation.
