Description
The DCi Albany sponsored 40 Act of Service was held on July 9th, 2011 at the James H Gray Civic Center in downtown Albany. Our clinic teamed up with the City of Albany Department of Community and Economic Development, and the Dougherty County Health Department, to host the “Kidney Kamp Health Fair” which provided an afternoon full of healthcare screenings and more for families of southwest Georgia. Over 400 adults and children alike packed the civic center. Participants had access to free screenings, including blood pressure and blood glucose, sponsored by DCi Albany; the 20 minute HIV testing provided by The Rural Clinic; Weight, BMI, Stroke Assessments, and Lead Based Paint Poisoning Testing was provided by the Dougherty County Health Department. DCi also sponsored the “Kip the Kidney” puppet show and kidney friendly cooking demonstrations, prepared by our own staff of dieticians. The puppet show featured a boy named Marcus, and his friend, “Kip” as they explore how your kidney’s work and how to keep them healthy. Participants also dined at the Kidney Café and sample recipes including macaroni and cheese, mock sausage, honey-lemon chicken, innovative greens and peach crumb dessert. Entertainment featured art displays, musical talents by two bands and a DJ, and aerobics and Zumba fitness demonstrations. Also for the children, there was also story time with Ms. Annette and face painting. Door prizes were given throughout the event. We had 5 artists participate in the "The Kidney Art Arena". They were as follows: An Artist who painted everything from family portraits to sports cars of Dale Ernhardt and Tommy Stuart. An Artist that specializes in painting ceiling tiles in a variety of vivid colors and techniques...some of which are displayed at our East of the Flint Facility. She also does scrapbooks and posters with great detail. An Artist that specializes in knitting all types of blankets and other pieces. Some of the most unique that we have ever seen. An Artist that crochets all types of items including stethoscope covers, placemats, long gloves for girls/ladies with feathers on them and many, many other items....lots dedicated to the local high schools and colleges with their colors. An Artist that paints on boards, canvas, and even a bed post. He is a wonderful "Georgia Bulldog" artist for those that are fans and also does charcoal drawings of famous people like, President Obama, Michael Jackson and etc...these you will have to see to appreciate how great the shadow work is on them. All of these artist are both talented and dialysis patients and this makes them very special people! A special thanks to them for coming to show off their special talents to the community.
