 These homestyle hamburgers from the American Kidney Fund Kidney Kitchen are the perfect addition to all of your cookouts and barbecues, and nothing says summer like fresh, homemade hamburgers! (Always talk to your doctor or dietitian if you are unsure about a new recipe.)

Ingredients
  • 12 ounces lean ground beef
  • ½ cup sweet onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon fresh garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • ½ teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped
  • Pinch of black pepper, freshly ground
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions
  1. In a large bowl, mix together the beef, onion, garlic, mustard, thyme and pepper until well combined.
  2. Divide the meat mixture into 4 equal balls, and form into ½-inch-thick patties.
  3. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat the olive oil.
  4. Pan-fry the burgers until they are cooked through and browned, about 6 minutes per side.
  5. Serve hot.

COOKING TIP 

Raw hamburger patties freeze well when they are tightly wrapped. You can double this recipe and freeze any leftovers for future meals. Place a piece of parchment paper between the patties for easy separation.
