On Saturday, April 22, 2016 DCI Shelby, South Shelby, Kings Mountain, and Boiling Springs presented the R.E.V. (Renal Education Visionaries) Up! Car Show. The community was able to admire 20 classic and modern cars showcased along the Shelby historic court square. Participates brought non-perishables to be donated to the Cleveland-Rutherford Kidney Association that serves and assists dialysis patients in Cleveland and Rutherford counties. Trophies were presented to best in show and four honorable mentions.
At this family oriented event, kids enjoyed a bouncy house, obstacle course and face painting. The young and the young-at-heart loved eating unique cotton candy flavors, shaved ice, and popcorn.
Education opportunities were also available for the public. Carolina’s Health Care System provided transplant information. LifeShare, an organ donation organization was also available to answer any questions event-goers may have had. A local liver transplant recipient volunteered to speak at the Life Share booth.
DCI also had the opportunity to educate local citizens through several booths. The general education booth allowed visitors to learn about kidney function and the risks of kidney failure. Handouts were available about diabetes and hypertension, the leading causes of ESRD. Information about CPR was also provided. Blood pressure checks were freely given to visitors as well. Additionally, other offered material covered home modality options that included peritoneal and home hemodialysis. Our dietician was a great source of renal-friendly nutrition information. Recipe cards and protein bar samples were on hand to give away.
Approximately 250 people, including current dialysis patients and a kidney transplant recipient, attended the Rev Up! Car Show. The event was a great success that included fun, community service, and kidney disease awareness.
