So our 5k/10k run this year was a bit different from any other professionally timed run. I purposely priced The Kidney Run as $5 5k and $10 10k. The extremely affordable prices allowed for participation from a greater diverse bunch of runners. I loved hearing the excitement from the first timers discovering a new passion. People have come up to me just to tell me when there next race is and how my run got them started. Everything we do has a ripple effect.
This year our volunteers were almost all college students. I say mostly because my family and I were up until 1 am on race day organizing the registration bags. We were extremely fortunate to welcome back the student organization AC Speaks from Angelina College which is headed by my former interpersonal communications teacher. This was the first year for The School of Nursing from Stephen F Austin State University ,which is here in Nacogdoches, to provide the majority of the volunteers and operate a health booth. Another health booth was provided by MedPost. In addition to all that good stuff we had a couple of special yummy treats for all our participants. Complete Nutrition provided samples of protein fruit drinks and many other supplements. Smoothie king was supposed to provide smoothies at the event but experienced a power outage the night before and lost all the their inventory for that day, but the still showed up and gave out free smoothie coupons to everyone. We always receive lots of support from our local businesses. The local Raising Canes Chicken restaurant held a fundraiser day in which the donated 15% of the days profits.
This run marked the first time my only brother, mom, dad were able to come in from California to join my wife, son and daughter self in a 5k/10k run.
What made this situation even better was it was my run.
In the end we had over 100 race participants and raised over 3,000 dollars for the local charity at Love inc.

About Love Inc. Kidney Fund
Kidney Disease effects an estimated 31 million people in the United States making this the 9th leading cause of death. The leading causes of Kidney failure are diabetes and high blood pressure. These common causes mean someone you know is already at risk for Kidney failure. Cost of treating kidney failure is expensive–costly to the patients, their families, employers and taxpayers.
All the proceeds from the Kidney Run will go to Love inc. of Nacogdoches Kidney Patient Fund to assist with costs such as transportation, medications, nutrition and transplant work-up.
