DCI Makes Dialysis Available to Kids in Shreveport
Shreveport, LA– Four and a half year old, Larry, is now receiving dialysis treatment for his kidney failure in the first pediatric unit in Northern Louisiana at the Dialysis Clinic, Inc. (DCI) facility located at 1322 Kings Hwy. Shreveport. This DCI facility has been providing dialysis treatments for over 15 years to adults. In 2010, Dr. Reisman and Dr. Habib, in conjunction with LSU Health Shreveport, began working with DCI to create an addition to the clinic that would serve the pediatric population. The pediatric unit officially opened January 25, 2012.
“There was no dialysis unit dedicated to children in the area. Kids had to travel to New Orleans, Austin, or Dallas to receive treatment. That could mean three hours by car,” states Dr. Habib, pediatric nephrologist. “We are here to serve the northern Louisiana area so that kids don’t have to travel those distances.”
“They have nice people here. They treat us with love,” states Veronica, Larry’s mother. “I feel very comfortable with the doctors and Larry likes coming here.”
If a pediatric unit is not available, children are treated among the adult population in a dialysis facility. Dr. Habib states, “We want the public to know we have openings. Other kids in adult facilities may want to move to this unit.”
When asked why it is important to have children treated in an area separate from adult dialysis patients, Dr. Habib stated, “Kids are not just little adults, they are kids. They need smaller equipment, more one on one care, and they need to be in their own environment for their physical and mental health.”
“The ability to provide the pediatric dialysis, a service that is not otherwise offered in this area, has been very rewarding to me. The building of this unit is in line with the DCI mission statement, ‘the care of the patient is our reason for existence’. It’s been wonderful to see how passionate and caring the doctors are with these children”, states Constance Thomas, DCI Administrator.
“We want the community to know we are here to meet their needs. We hope everyone will come to our Open House on Tuesday, March 13th. from 3-5:30 p.m. We would love to explain what we do and we’d be honored to have everyone celebrate the opening of the unit with us,” says Ms. Thomas.
The DCI pediatric unit is accepting new patients. The unit offers hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis therapies, Monday- Saturday, 6 a.m. until 5 p.m. The phone number is: 318-226-1020.
