DCI believes kidney and organ transplants provide patients with the best quality of life, and we are committed to seeking preemptive transplant before the need for dialysis, when possible. In 1974, just three years after being founded, DCI hired its first transplant coordinator. By the time the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) was awarded the contract for maintenance of a national registry for organ matching in 1986, DCI had already coordinated more than 600 kidney transplants. DCI now operates three Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs) that connect the life-saving gifts of organ, eye and tissue donors to those who need them most.
