Free Chronic Kidney Disease Awareness Day, July 21, Pittsburgh

(Pittsburgh, PA) On July 21 from 2:00pm -5:00pm Dialysis Clinic, Inc. (DCI), will host a free community event, Chronic Kidney Disease Community Awareness Day, for everyone to enjoy. The event will be located at the Mayernik Center in Avonworth Community Park (498 Camp Horne Rd. Pittsburgh, PA).

Free food will be provided. The WISH 99.7 Street Treat Patrol will be handing out free treats until 3:30pm while featuring the on-air sounds of WISH 99.7.

A variety of activities will be available, including blood pressure screenings, education booths, face painting, ‘bean-go’, and more.

Patricia Weirich, DCI North Borough Nurse Manager, states, “The purpose of this project is to educate the community about Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), the causes and effects of kidney disease, and the importance of early detection, follow up and treatment options.”

“One out of nine adults has kidney disease and there is no cure. Increasing awareness and encouraging the community to request screening for kidney disease from their family doctor and early referral to a nephrologist should have a huge impact on the renal community. People identified as high risk for chronic kidney disease will have the opportunity to learn how to slow the progression of kidney disease, learn about treatment options for kidney failure, including transplantation. And most importantly, they will be prepared for that option rather than being forced into one emergently. Educated, empowered people tend to transition better when faced with kidney failure,” says Patricia.

The event is part of a nationwide program, The DCI Purpose Project, which seeks to educate communities about the risk factors for kidney disease and the need for organ donation; identify those at risk for kidney disease; and provide support and encouragement for people with chronic kidney disease.

The DCI North Borough and North Hills teams encourage the community to attend The Chronic Kidney Disease Community Awareness Day. For more information call Patricia at (412) 766-6590.
