On July 16, 2011, the Northern Nevada Nephrons held an educational Wellness Fair at the Carson Colony Senior Center in Carson City, Nevada. The Fair went from 10:00am to 2:00pm. In addition to the Nephrons’ nutrition booth, the Tribal Clinic performed blood pressure and foot checks, and one of the dentists who works with the tribe had a booth as well. Just outside the Senior Center were two DCI patients: one selling handmade jewelry and the other selling Indian tacos with her family. There was also a Spiderman bounce house for the kids. At noon, Michelle Cowee from Sierra Dietetics gave an excellent presentation on nutrition, specifically focusing on diabetes and kidney care. Her presentation was followed by a brief discussion and Q&A with one of our local Nurse Practitioners, Cynthia Ferrall. There were many questions and great participation from the audience. We also gave away door prizes that were donated by local businesses. As the fair drew to a close, we were gratified with the results. Many people from the greater Carson City area came together to educate and benefit our attendees, especially the Native American community. We were proud to partner with the Carson Colony to provide this wellness fair and hope to work with them again in the future. We appreciate this opportunity to serve our community and wish to thank DCI for making it possible. Lastly, one of our team members, Lynn Remington, RD at Carson City, suffered the sudden, tragic loss of her husband, Dave, just two days before the event. We wish to dedicate our project to his memory.
