Weight loss program with Weight Watchers

Noticing that many patients asking for a transplant were put on hold due to being overweight, we thought a good project for one the 40 Acts was to help these people lose weight. Some of the staff are Weight Watchers members so why not see if we could join forces for this special weight loss project. Weight watchers agreed and the project was a go.
We started by sending out a notice to the dialysis clinics in Tucson and to the Transplant Team at University Medical Center about our project. Fifteen people responded from six different clinics.
These 15 people and the members of the project team met on March 27, 2011 at the DCI Prince Road clinic to kick off the Lose For Life project. Tables of healthy snacks were provided. The clinic dietitian was there to answer food related questions. And, for moral support, Life Time Weight Watchers member were there to share their stories of success and to answer questions about the Weight Watchers program.
Each participant was provided a 16 week membership to Weight Watchers and the basic member kit with the Points Plus calculator. The project leader compiled a list of Weight Watchers’ meeting places so that the participants could choose a site close to their home.
Initial excitement about losing weight to get the transplant was high. We found, though, as the weeks passed, life issues prevented some people from regularly attending the meetings. Monthly follow-ups revealed some people who had lost weight. While others continued to struggle with old eating habits.
Of the 9 people who completed the 16 weeks, all experienced a “positive” result. For some people, there was little weight loss but they did realize how bad their eating habits were. Some learned just how big a ‘portion’ really was. And one of the participants got family members to go to the meetings passing on good healthy eating habits through the family.
Four successful people lost between 11 and 17 pounds. One patient is now active on the transplant list. The other three are continuing on with their weight loss journey and are getting close to their goal.
